App privacy

Updated 25 October 2026 · Free Windows reader

Your books stay on your computer

The Free reader needs no account. It stores managed copies of imported books, prepared text, notes, bookmarks, reading positions and preferences on your device. Opening a book, searching it, using the timer and viewing recent passages do not upload your books or ask an AI service for a response. We have not added app analytics or advertising trackers.

Online definitions and translation

The first time you use Explain or Translate, Library of One asks for permission before sending anything. With permission, Explain sends the selected word or phrase to FreeDictionaryAPI.com, and Translate sends the selected text and language pair to MyMemory. You can reset both permissions in Library settings under Privacy and support. Resetting prevents future requests until you grant permission again; it cannot recall text already sent. Merely selecting text sends nothing. The app does not send your book title, other passages, notes or library with these lookups. Providers receive the network information needed to answer a request, including your IP address.

MyMemory may retain submitted text long term and process it with partners. Read its service terms and usage limits. Avoid submitting private or sensitive text. Online lookups need an internet connection, are subject to provider availability and limits, and their results are not guaranteed to be accurate.

Backups, exports and removal

You choose where to save notes and library backups. A library backup contains your books and writing; protect it as you would the original files. Restoring a backup keeps the previous library in a recovery folder. Removing a book from the library removes its library entry and writing, without changing the source file you originally imported. Managed copies and recovery files may remain in the app data folder until you remove them.

Use Library settings to open the data folder and make a backup before removing stored data. The established Windows folder is %APPDATA%\Quiet Reader; a Store installation may use Windows-managed storage redirection. Uninstalling a Store app can remove its local app data, so export a backup first.

Website and support

The optional readers’ list has a separate website privacy notice. Joining it is not required to use the app. Andrew Campbell operates Library of One. Email andrew@libraryofone.app for support or privacy questions. If you contact us, your message and address are processed to respond; avoid attaching books or backups unless you intend to share their contents.

Future services

Plus, optional AI and account services are planned separately. They are not part of this Free release. Their privacy information will be provided before those services become available.
